Working with bulk materials quantities

Bulk material is sold by weight in some regions and by volume in others, which is the single most common source of ordering errors. Every calculator here shows both, along with the density it assumes — ask your supplier for the density of the specific product before a large order, because a 10% difference in density is a 10% difference on the invoice.

Worth knowing: Loose volume runs 15 to 25% higher than compacted volume. These calculators give the compacted, in-place quantity — the figure you actually need on the ground.

These 14 calculators cover about 132,410 searches a month between them. Every one prints the formula it uses and a worked example, so you can check the result by hand before you order.
